Project Term

12 months (January 2002)

The Aim, the Signaficance, and the Expected Outcomes of the Project:

The mineralogical and chemical make up of mortar samples taken from selected buildings of Beylikler Era in Aegean Region will be investigated(3). In addition, laboratory scale re-production of original mortars will be performed.

The first phase of the project will cover sampling and labeling followed by XRD, SEM, TGA, optical microscope, AAS and ICP analysis. XRD and TGA will help us identify the mineralogical phases found in the mortar samples. Microscopy will reveal their physical status while the chemical analysis will help us match the compositions. This information will be utilized in laboratory manufacture of original mortars.

In the final phase of the project, original mortars suitable for restoration will be reproduced in the lab.
